Having carried out 30+ pilot cabin waste audits in Singapore in 2023-’24, the ASF, in conjunction with IATA, has subsequently established the Cabin Waste Composition Audit (CWCA) Program as the standard methodology for the measuring and recording of cabin and catering waste. This development means that for the first time, the sector now has a Standard Operating Procedure to sort, measure and record waste therefore ensuring that all stakeholders count the same things in the same way.

The IATA World Sustainability Summit, held in Miami this past September, brought together airlines, OEMs, government officials, NGOs, and innovators to address the critical pathways needed to achieve aviation’s 2050 ICAO Net Zero target.
Key discussions cantered on accelerating sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) infrastructure and production, advancing aircraft designs, and driving future aeroengine innovations. These efforts underscore a pressing reality: while fuel and technology solutions are vital for the sector’s long-term sustainability, they are lagging behind the rapid growth in aviation and its increasing appetite for new aircraft.

For the first time, our sector now has a standardised operating procedure for the segregating, measuring and recording of cabin and catering waste. The ASF Cabin Waste Composition Audit (CWCA) methodology is endorsed by IATA and is the established, globally recognised process and data capture method for cabin and catering waste audits for the aviation sector.
Developed over the past 18 months and supported by the ASF data platform, leading airlines are signing up to the ASF’s CWCA program to help them establish robust CWCA measurement and analysis of their cabin waste baseline across their network – a powerful data set enabling airlines to accurately report on waste levels to internal and external stakeholders that has the support of the ASF & IATA and clear visibility of the key waste targets to be reduced and the corresponding cost savings and reduction in CO2e.
The ASF’s unique program has been created following months of trial audits, database and dashboard development and engagement with key stakeholders across the inflight supply chain and is now being rolled out by the ASF Team globally.
